The NGSS scientific and engineering practices come directly from Chapter 3 of   A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas ( 2012 ). Take a look at your grade level’s quick guide to see how they fit in with the Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) and Crosscutting Concepts. Paul Andersen of Bozeman Science has a video series that does an excellent job of summarizing the practices and shows the progression of the grade bands. I posted them below.

1. Asking questions and defining problems:

2. Developing and using models

3. Planning and carrying out investigations

4. Analyzing and interpreting data

5. Using mathematics and computational thinking

6. Constructing explanations and designing solutions

7. Engaging in argument from evidence

8. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
